Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple

Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple was built by Maharaja Marthanda Varma (1729-1758) in 1733 AD. It is one of the most impressive landmarks of Thiruvananthapuram city. The temple has an imposing seven tier gopuram covered with beautiful stone carvings. The walls of the temple are covered with interesting mural paintings depicting mythical stories. The presiding deity at Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple is Lord Vishnu, reclining on the serpent 'Anantha'. The idol is an 18 feet long imposing figure which is covered with gold and precious stones.

Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple has a blend of Dravidian and Kerala architecture. The Natakasala, inside the Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple, was once the centre of all cultural activities in Travancore. Only Hindus are allowed inside the temple and dress regulations are strictly followed. Two festivals are celebrated every year, one in Meenam (March-April) and the second one in Thulam (October-November).
